BEING A VOLUNTEER IN GLOBAL MENTAL HEALTH: THE UK, AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND EXPERIENCE

This workshop is aimed at psychiatrists, both senior and junior, as well as trainees interested in volunteering their time and skills to neighbouring countries in the Asia-Pacific region. The workshop will explore the volunteer work currently being undertaken within the RANZCP and FCAP. The longer experience of volunteerism within the Royal College of Psychiatry will be presented by UK psychiatrist Dr Sophie Thomson. She will in particularly focus on WHO mhGAP as a set of tools for use in undertaking such work. Specifically some mhGAP modules will be explored in greater detail. The experience of early career psychiatrists and trainees in volunteering will be presented by recently graduated Fellows involved in some of the Pacific projects as early career psychiatrists or as senior trainees. The day will finish with a discussion by senior Pacific island nation psychiatric leaders about their experience and hopes around a greater engagement with Australia and New Zealand psychiatrists. The workshop will be very interactive with plenty of time for discussion.
