Associate Professor Stevenson has been in psychiatric practice now for over 38 years, working in adult and old age psychiatry. Currently she is Medical Director of an Older Adult inpatient psychiatry unit as well as seeing outpatients for long-term psychotherapy.
In addition to clinical work she has been involved in research into personality disorders, their diagnosis, prevalence and outcome of psychotherapy, over 30 years. She has been on the board of the International Society for the Study of Personality Disorders and has presented her research at international conferences as well as publishing in peer -reviewed journals.
She has teaching commitments at the University of Sydney, both with undergraduates and post-graduates. She lectures and supervises post-graduates in Sydney University’s Master of Medicine program, which teaches psychotherapy for victims of complex trauma.
Her work also extends to teaching doctors in China, where psychiatry is a fledgling specialty as well as community voluntary work with GPs and community case managers.
